not fantasy, but science fiction. apparently my memory serves me very badly; i was all excited to give her ender's game because i liked it when i read it decades ago and it was about a kid and everything ...but when i picked it up to reread it i realized how much more brutal it was than i remembered. anybody have a recommendation for something a little more age-appropriate but still challenging for a 10-year-old strong reader and a good story? she's already read the mushroom planet books and the wrinkle in time books.
love tuck everlasting but she already read that, too.

i was thinking about asimov books too, munny, but i just can't remember what age group they might be appropriate for. i'll check it out, and the other suggestions, too. thanks everybody.

i would let her read Enders game, and Enders shadow, there heavy but if shes like me a strong and avid reader shell LOVE them evn tho there "heavy"

also the Enchanted forest series: Calling on dragons, dealing with dragons, searching for dragons...ect, are great and very funny take off on our "classic" fearie tales

Warrior Cats Series: theres like 15 of them already

the Black Stallion searies is a classic

ANYTHING by Bruce Coville

and nothing like browsing a used book store for a hidden treasure

Personally I enjoyed I Robot by Isaac Asimov

much better than the stupid movie

(not that I dont love Will Smith)

*disclaimer it has been a while since I read it I hope that it does not fall into the same category as ender's game

Isaac Asimov writes novels and a series of short stories for kids/young adults that are pretty good, Young Star Travellers, Foundation etc.

Douglas Adams also writes novels (and I think an anthology of short stories aimed towards young adults) some more fantasy, some sci-fi.

PJ Haarsma writes some good material too, also suitable for kids that age.

I read "The Hobbit" when I was 10 and absolutely loved it. I remember sneaking a flashlight into my room to read it at night just because it was so captivating I didn't want to put it down. It's definitely a more complex book than most geared for kids that age, but I loved it. It is more fantasy than science fiction, but it satisfied me. I also LOVED "Artemis Fowl."

Our library has list of sci books for kids on their website. Here's the link:

Tuck Everlasting.. a little more fantasy but still fits sci-fi in a way. It's a great book though. Look into it.

Well harry potter is an odvious one. Animorphs was my favorite in 5th grade. its a series about kids who meet alains and they give them the power to transform into animals. it has alot of books in the series so she wont run out of different books fast but each one is a different kid and a different mission so she wont get bored. its really interensting and insightful.... and if u use the bottem page corner like a flip boot you can see the kids change into the animals. and Series of Unfortionate Events was a good one too. enjoy. =)
