Can a Blu-Ray disk drive detect other dvd formats?

...like can i play my pc games and normal dvd's as well as Blu-Ray or is the Blu-Ray drive just for Blu-Ray disks? This is for a computer by the way.
 
Any decent Blue Ray drive will read Dual layer DVD and CD.The drive itself is backwards compatible.This is also why the PS3 runs all PS2 games or any DVD movie as well.It is not so much the laser differences but the software used to control the drive.You should have no problem watching a 10 year old DVD or listening to the Eagles Greatest Hits on CD.Just make sure the drivers are up to date and compatible.
 
most of the new ones read all dvd and cd formats , but u have to cross check . ( i havent seen one tht doesnt do it ) but there are some
