Can a virtual currency be created like bitcoin, to be backed by sports trading cards?

Bitcoin was created for gamers who used those online to buy their minutes on games. Why can't there be a currency used in association with professional sports players trading cards also?
 
No. In fact all digital currencies are backed by NOTHING tangible, just the trust and confidence of its users.
