Bodhidarma, circa 5th/6th century CE, was the first patriach of Shaolin Temple, and was the person who began the physical training of monks that developed into Shaolinquan (or Shaolin martial arts). Bodhidarma was credited as the first transmitter of Zen Buddhism.
