Can AT&T detect and add data plan to a T-Mobile branded unlocked Blackberry?

I know that AT&T can now detect if you are using a smartphone on their network by looking at the IMEI number of that device. They will add the appropriate data plan if you don't have it. I read somewhere that if it is AT&T branded, then that device is on file. If I were to buy an unlocked phone (blackberry) that wasn't AT&T branded, could they still detect that I am using a blackberry and add the data plan?

I'm wondering about the same thing. I've stopped using my blackberry because AT&T add the data plan on my bill even though I never used the internet. If you know the answer, can you let me know? thanks!
