Can electricity meters be faulty?

I'm curious, and fairly desperate to figure this out. According to the meter we are using about 45 kilowatt hours a day. Last winter it was 27 kwh, and we haven't got any new Appliances or changed anything since then.

Can the meter be wrong?

it's unlikely the meter but possible, one of your appliances could be faulty and draining electricity when you think it's turned off, big things like TV/heaters can do this. Make sure everything you want off is unplugged completely and try turning off some things you can live without for a day and see how it changes your usage.
