Can i access the internet on my ipod through a wireless router in my home?

I live in a bad place for wi-fi and whenever i check for wi-fi connections on my Ipod Touch it just comes up eircom7344-43435 or some other wierd number but will i be able to connect through that?
Some connections from where i live are wireless routers aswell but even without protection when i connect it doesn't work!
