can i buy a T-Mobile smartphone from craigslist and not use the data plan?

i want a better phone especially a touch screen one and the nicer ones for t-mobile are all smartphones, can i just buy one from craigslist and use the phone just for calls and texting? i really dont want to add the data plan.
