A year ago I got a 2006 VW Golf and the dealership only provided me with one switchblade key. Well, I'd like to have a spare, but I've note been able to afford one until now. Recently I bought an owner's book for it and learned that there's supposed to be a plastic key tag with a number on it. And that new keys can only be made if the folks making the new key have that number. I've looked everywhere on the internet and found nothing so far. Can I still get a spare key made if I bring my existing key to my local VW dealership? Or do I have to just be very careful not to lose the one I have?
Edit: By the way I already know about ebay.
and I do intend to get blank keys from there before I have them cut.
