can i get service for an iphone anywere else than at&t?

I was in the same dilemma. The only way to do it at this point and time is to "jailbreak" your iphone, however that can permanently damage your sweet new iphone. To be honest, AT&T service really isn't that bad. It's no Verizon, but for real, it's not that bad man.

The government actually just passed a law rendering it legal to jail break an iphone. Jailbreaking is basically reseting the phone which means you can now change the carrier holder (you don't have to have at&t) and many free apps and other things you would normally have to pay for. Unfortunately there are many setbacks like forfeiting your warranty and more.
