i was given a Sony Viao all-in-one desktop, it came with a Netgear 108mbps wireless adaptor card, but the pc only displays a speed of 54mbps. Which is very very slowwwww...

what are my options for increasing the connection speed?
cheers

I agree with Joe, my wireless link is 54mbps as well via the card, but its faster with a direct cable link connection plugged in, the router, the main comp. has 1.4Mg via broadband and I'm miles away from the exchange.

The 54 Mbps speed is the speed between your pc and your router. This is moderatlely fast.

Your Internet speed, even at the best likely speed of 10 Mbps from a CATV feed, is still a lot slower. I suspect your Internet speed is less than 10 Mbps. This is the slower link. If you want to purchase a faster service you may get a faster link.

Finally if you did not measure speed using a speed test web site, you may have been misled. Many think a downloading server's download speed is your internet speed. In fact downloading servers are throttled back and often decrease in speed as number of users increases.

Run a speed test from a web speed test site. If it is way slower than your service is supposed to be, disconnect router and run pc directly wired to the modem and run again. If it is still far slower than it should be contact ISP while you are linked directly to modem as something is in need of service by the ISP.

It will only go as fast as the fastest hunk of hardware on the network. if your router (I'm assuming you have a router) only does 54mbps, that's all you're going to get.

Besides, none of this has anything to do with your Internet speed. That's determined by the bandwidth your service provider sells you. The speed your talking about above is between you and the router.

hi here are some tips to increase your speed
Configure your browser so it won't display graphics, animations, sound, video .
Surf when Internet traffic is low. Heaviest traffic is usually on weekends and evenings.
Upgrade your modem.
Consult with your Internet service provider to ensure that your modem is configured correctly.
Replace your telephone modem with a fast-access connection such as wave, ISDN, DSL, satellite, a cable modem.
and now check your connection speed here ip-details.com .
