Can I keep my Red eared sliders outdoors during the winter in Alabama?

I've had my Red eared sliders for about a year now. They have grown a ton so a few months ago I took out of their 20 gallon and built them an outdoor enclosure (overall they have about 400 gallons now).

But summer has just ended here and its getting cold. Yesterday it got down to about 40 degrees. I know they live out in the wild in cold conditions but the water they are in is only maybe a foot or 2 deep. Will they be ok out there?

The bottom of the enclosure is pool liner so they can not dig into the mud or borrow or anything.

So should I go ahead and buy a new tank and put them inside for the winter or will they be fine? I really can't afford anything over a 45-55 gallon tank and I feel bad that they would would have to go from 400 gallons to something that small.

Turtles sizes: 1 is about 5 inches and the other is about 4 inches. (I know a 55 gallon tank really isn't big enough)

I would personally put them inside. Weather can get pretty cold in Alabama and they might freeze to death. try out the tank for now.
