Can I load Divx files (movies) off an external harddrive connected to a ps3?

I hope this concept isn't over everybody's head. I don't own a ps3, yet. But I Read that a firmware update that occurred on the ps3 allows for DIVX movies to played on the ps3. Now, I know that these movies can be stored on the ps3's harddrive. Now, I also read that the ps3 has a few usb ports. Now I assume that you can attach an a external harddrive to these usb ports. I'm curious would it be possible to store divx files (movies) on an external harddrive (100gb+) and attach it through the usb, to play the movies on the ps3.
 
Yeah, it's possible. I have a 500gb hdd for my ps3 that I store everything on, divx movies aswell. So hard drives need to be formatted for the ps3 to read it, but some do not. Right now I cannot remember the format but if you look online you can find it. I have a western digital hard drive and it was already is the correct format so I did not have to reformat it. hope this helps
