Can i mix memory modules instead of using two of the same?

I have 3gb which is not enough for gaming...

So i was going to replace my 1gb stick with a 4gb stick. However i cannot find out what the memory rate is, even when using the crucial scan. What happens if you have two sticks of DDR3 memory with different transfer rates?

Will it work?
