The car weighs 3,225 lbs and its orginal engine is a V-8 283 cu in which produced 283 HP. So i was wondering if i could put a Mustang or Camaro engine that produced 310Hp and gets 30MPG.

this is the same question as your 64 Chrysler question with a different car. my answer is the same.

all the other responders hit one of the 2 nails to answer your question. yes, a different engine will help, but it is not a cost effective answer, as everybody else stated.

The other factor you need to consider is Aerodynamics. The easier it is for air to move around the car, the better fuel economy the car will have also. Aerodynamics is what allows 2 different cars of equal weight to get different fuel economy numbers.

Imagine if you will a 10 pound cinder block. Flat on all 6 sides, rough surfaces all around. It would take more energy to push the air around this shape than, say, a 10 pound artillery shell that is pointed at the front and has smooth surfaces all over it. The same energy might get both objects to the same speed, but the block will slow down and stop faster than the artillery shell (hence the phrase "All the aerodynamics of a Brick").
