Can i put my fighter/betta fish on my windowsill or is the sun too strong?

I currently have my fighter/betta fish on my shelf but i want to transfer it to a bigger tank but think the shelf isn't strong enough to hold it, I want to put it on my windowsill but am worried the sun might agrivate it. Help?
