Can I study fashion merchandising at FIT and be a newbie to fashion?

I am thinking of going to the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. I either want to study textile design or fashion merchandising, or possibly something else... The fashion merchandising management class seems really interesting, and I want to try it out. I've been interested in fashion ever since I was little, but I never got into it deeply enough to know A LOT about it. However I really do want to learn more about the fashion industry and all that. My question is, would it be difficult and/or stupid to go into it, with other students who are really experienced and knowledgeable about fashion while I'm sort of a newbie? I love the idea of the course, it seems very interesting to me. I'm just a little worried that I won't fit in. I'm fairly smart and I think I have a good sense of color and design, and I'm a fast learner, so I'm not really all that worried about flunking in that sense. If you are a fashion merchandising student or if you go to FIT can you tell me what you think?

Thanks a lot!
