Can I switch out iPhone sim cards?

I have a family plan and I am planning on getting the white iphone 4 soon. But when september comes, I want to switch to the iphone 5. Can I get the iphone 4 now, with my number, then have my family member get the iphone 5 in September, then we switch sim cards (so I can keep my number)?
