Can i use a non-unlocked iphone 4s on T-Mobile?

Just to be clear im gonna throw out a scenario; say i go up to an AT&T store and purchase a new iphone 4s. I get home, open the back, insert my T-Mobile SIM card, and turn the phone on. Would i be able to make calls and/or text with that phone without unlocking/jail-breaking it?

I'm pretty sure that you can switch the SIM card's an the phone will work since AT&T and T-Mobile are both GSM. I know that a lot of other people have iphones on the T-Mobile network that are from AT&T but if you buy a new iphone from AT&T you would have to get it with a contract. I would buy it unlocked from Apple or off of eBay which I think would be your best bet. You just have to make sure it's an AT&T iphone so that it's GSM
