can I use my dish 500 to use with my fta reciever?

I recently purchased a magnavox sdtv tuner, I have a little rabbit ear antenna, and the channels keep drifting in and out? I have a direct tv dish installed ( it was here when I moved in) and I was woundering if I could use that antenna to recieve fta channels, Not looking to steal cable or anything, I just want to bet better reception for the free to air channels?
