Can I use my iphone 4 overseas?

Im planning on going on a cruise this march and was curious as to whether or not i'll be able to use my at&t phone out of the u.s. I'll be stopping in mexico, jamacia, and other carribean countries.

Also, people have told me that some carriers offer coverage on a cruise ship. Is all this true?
