Can i use my unlimited data allowance from my iphone contract with a usb modem?

I have an iphone 3g contract with o2 that comes with unlimited data and i was wandering if i can use this unlimited data sim card in my mobile broadband usb dongle to connect to the internet on my laptop. does anyone know if the unlimited data allowance is only valid when the sim is in an iphone or if it's valid with all devices? the reason i am asking is that i don't wanna be slapped with a huge bill at the end of the month.
 
I know that here in Ireland O2 says that using the iPhone as a USB modem will be charged-for outside the data plan. Chances are good that it works the same in the UK.
