Can someone help me with possible Ignition problem on mazda Tribute?

I have a 2002 Mazda Tribute and recently I begun having problems with starting. There is NO clicking or any other noise when I try to start the vehicle and I'm under the impression that if it was a starter problem I would at least hear clicking. Although I have been told it must be the starter I don't agree because someone told me to twist the key hard backwards in the off position and even though it doesn't go past off it works every time without fail. I press hard on the key twisting it backwards and then try starting it and it works. All the dash indicator lights come on when I turn the key on but nothing happens until I twist the key backwards. Has anyone had a similar experience and if so how did you fix it?
EDIT: also do you know where the electrical switch is located for the ignition?
