1. How did the attitude of the main character and, while they lasted, his friends, change toward the war as it went on?

2. Why was the main character uncomfortable when he was on leave after recovering from his wound?

3. Why is the novel considered one of the great anti-war novels of all time?

1 ) Started out as enthusiastic boys , enthusiasm dented during basic training by abusive trainers , dented further as the reality of war is realised , to the point where the survivors simply wish the whole horrible thing to end .

2 ) he is still alive , so many of his friends families are mourning their dead sons , he cannot tell them the real truth about how their sons died .

3 ) Cuts through all the patriotic claptrap to show war for what it is .
