...fitness wise) and Muay Thai? I'm 16 and looking for a fun way to exercise and keep my weight down. I've heard that kickboxing is a great way to burn calories, does anyone have success stories to share? I'm also wondering about the difficulty level and what I should expect.

While looking up kickboxing, I found out that it's closely related to Muay Thai. All I know about that is it's a high energy form of martial arts. What's are differences between the two forms are exercising and which do you prefer?

Muay Thai involves elbowing and kneeing. It has more real world applications than kickboxing (if you ever want to beat anyone up). Muay Thai>kickboxing any day.

Fitness wise, martial arts involves cardio, flexibility, slow twitch, and fast twitch muscles. You need to go for a long time and go fast. A fully built martial artist will beat up a body builder any day, in the same manner Bruce Lee would beat up anyone bigger than him. A martial arts practitioner aims for the "perfect" form of their body, where they maximize strength, speed, and endurance without compromising the others.

Basically, martial arts is partially about mastering your body and the rest about learning how to beat someone up. Even though I use the words "beat up" a lot in this article, they will always teach you how to protect yourself first before light sparring, and you can always opt to sit out on sparring.
