Can the business you work for afford this - or can you?

The Department for Transport, headed by Geoff Hoon, is proposing to allow councils to implement the staff parking charge at any premises with ten or more spaces. If the company cannot afford it, this will have to be passed onto the staff using the spaces - £350.00 per space, per year. Businesses already pay for that 'space' in their rates. Nottingham City Council has applied to implement these charges despite the economic shambles.
What about the thousands of people who live and work out in the countryside - those who work at Asda, Tesco etc out of town? What about disabled staff - there's no talk of making parking free for them - that wouldn't be fair and equal would it?
Please don't say they can use public transport - we have one bus into and one bus out of our closest city Monday to Saturday. 8am in and 5pm out - not many people CAN use it.
Noeusper - quite, when this was first mooted they were also talking about businesses having to pay for customer parking spaces but then David Sainsbury and the nice man who used to be at Asda got their two penn'orth in. The point is that ALL of these spaces are already being paid for on land rates to the local council and when you submit a planning application THEY are the people who dictate how many spaces you must have for staff and customers.
Hal, David Sainbury and Archie Norman were only concerned that their businesses would have to stand the cost of customer parking or put customer meters in - and it was a SINGLE proposal - i reviewed it as a member of our City Business Partnership. Why are people being hounded in this way? You are obviously someone who can use public transport but there are tens of thousands in this country who rely and have to on their own transport and they pay road tax so that your bus can travel!
Hal, it's not just about city centre parking! Where have you got that from? It's just Nottingham who have started the ball rolling but once implemented it will be adopted at all business premises with 10 or over staff parking spaces if the local council decides that's the way forward.
