...bonuses in the billions...*? shouldn't the Madoff scandal victims be "bailed out" ? "AIG" provides vacations and bonuses to their employees in the billions.. from bailout.* Why not the people that tried to invest in the economy that got FUBAR'ed?
Seeker. There is insurance for your ipod and windshields. Wouldn't it be nice if there was something like that for your investments?
*I mean being a true investment.

AIG and other major financial institutions paid their executives the money they were due as outlined in their employment contracts. You may feel that these executives are overpaid, but frankly, it is not really up to you to decide what an appropriate salary would be. Almost all of the financial institutions that accepted bailout money have completely repaid their loans. I honestly don't know if it was a good policy overall, and I do not think we will ever be able to know if it was a better option than the alternatives, but it really is not as simplistic as some people make it out to be.

Madoff's victims were certainly screwed over by a criminal, but that is a completely different situation. They were not owed a salary by a company that could not afford to pay them. If the government gave them all back their money, then the government would also be obligated to pay me back when my ipod gets stolen from my car or when some vandal breaks my window. It is tragic how much criminals can screw up the lives of their victims, but the government cannot be called upon to fix all of these wrongs.
