Can you replace the gears in your VW transaxle with a spur gear set cheaply?

I want to either build or buy a cheap transaxle with a non synchro gear set. The only setup like this I have been able to find costs a fortune(thousands). Is there some cheap set I am just not finding?

My main goal is to make a VW transaxle with a close gear ratio to allow shifting without clutching.

Do you have to have spur gears to do this? Or can this be done with close ratio helical gears too if no synchros? or can you do this with synchros too?

Don't race cars use straight cut gears? Called dog boxes?

Don't crotch rocket motorcycles use straight cut gears too?

Maybe I am wrong.
Also, synchros slow down speed of gear changes.. and I forgot to mention this is for the classic VW bug..
