Can you turn a Nintendo Gamecube controller into a PC USB one?

Will simply cutting the end of the wire where the gamecube input is and replacing it with a USB one work? Or what else can I do?
Looked all over for an adapter couldnt find one. Chinese made ones on Ebay would cost me 30$ including shipping.
