Simple solution - play the original sport, baseball.

Even if it were allowed I think that would be a poor choice. I played baseball for 15 years mostly as a catcher and have my own catcher's mitt, I would never use it to play softball simply because the softball is too big to fit in the pocket of a baseball catchers mitt.
