The Wii, the DS, they're a hit with everyone. The 360, it's a hit with...some people. Definitely not everyone. My Mum, for example, doesn't know what a 360 is, though the name "Xbox" rung a bell. Reason for this? Casual games. Games for old folks, games for little girls, games for bigger girls, that's what you find on Nintendo consoles. On 360, you find men. Men with guns, men driving cars, men playing sports. Which lacks universal appeal. Something Microsoft have long been aware of, and have decided to again publicly announce that they're aware of.
Xbox Europe's Chris Lewis:
Our drive is to appeal to a wider genre with more casual types of gaming. Clearly we need to continue toward more casual-based gaming experiences, and more peripheral-based gaming experiences in front of the screen.
You're going to hear more about that at E3. For 360 to appeal in the way we want it to and for us to achieve our aspirations, we need to be in the broader space as well as investing in the core element.
I've heard this before. Several times, actually, now you mention it. And what did they say about the multinational corporation that cried wolf, children?
Microsoft squares up to Nintendo [MCV]
