My dog was injured by a stick. 3 days ago, the vet sutured it and gave her antibiotics. The next day it was bleeding a lot, but she thought it was ok. Yesterday, she had to operate to remove the skin around the sutures, as it wasn't viable. The wound itself is now about 5" long and has a drain. The sutures look fine, but my dog is resistant to my cleaning around the drain, and "wiggling" it as I was instructed to do 2-3 times/day. The vet said this shouldn't bother her at all, but it seems like it really hurts.
Is it normal for it to hurt around the drain, or should we be off to the emergency vet for our 6th vet visit in 4 days? We have another visit scheduled for Monday morning with the regular vet. She also advised to put petroleum jelly under the drain so the skin doesn't get irritated. There is now a large area of fur with vaseline, blood and other fluids, and a dog who is increasingly less happy to see me coming with a cloth.
I'll feel better if I hear this is fairly normal -- what's throwing me is that the vet said it wouldn't bother her.
thank you!
