Cat can't or won't use cat dish properly?

I bought my cats this feeder bowl that allows you to fill it up with a lot of cat food and the cat just has to paw at the food and more cat food will come down...but for some reason my cats refuse to do this. Is it cause some cats just won't or are my cats stupid? Is it because they use those paws to move kitty litter around and don't want any falling into their bowl? I bought the bowl so that I could go on vacation for the weekend and not have to worry about them going hungry.
