Changing volume causes computer to freeze?

I have a HP Pavilion dv9827cl laptop, with touch-sensitive volume and DVD controls. When I use my volume "buttons", a translucent grey box appears in the middle of the screen displaying the volume bar. The problem is, this box won't go away for up to two minutes, and causes my computer to freeze up until it goes away! I checked the HP website, and they provided a patch for the Quicklaunch buttons, but after i installed the patch, nothing has changed. Help?
 
un-install all that garbage. it just uses too much memory.
