I am having some charging problems with a 1983 toyota pickup, Ive had this truck for over 12 years but this just started for the past few months,

I found out about this because my headlights blew out, when i went to check the voltage, IT WAS 24 VOLTS!!

At first i thought it was the regulator but i decided to change the Alternator and the regulator at the same time, but still the same problem, I had the alternator and regulator tested off of the truck and they work fine,

This is how it works when on the truck, when everything is connected and in place, the truck is charging at 24 volts, if you disconnect the battery, the engine starts knocking REALLY bad and the voltage shoots up to about 36 volts.

If i remove the voltage regulator from ground but keep the rest connected, there is no problem, the voltage on the battery drops to about 14 volts, but if i disconnect the battery, it drops to 6 volts and stays on for a few seconds before it putters out.

is this a gounding problem!?!? if not what

what can i doohooohoo? :,(
