So I was just in a chatroom, and some girl said she was from Saipan. I'm a geo nerd, but I wasn't quite sure where in the Pacific Saipan is. So I asked her if it was near the Philippines or not.
She took forever to reply, so I swung around and found it on the map on my wall (because only cool kids have maps in their bedroom). Turns out, Saipan is east of the Philippines.
So she replies eventually, saying that Saipan is *south* of the Philippines. Going by my map, she was clearly wrong, so just to be annoying I asked her why she didn't know where her country is.
She corrected me on the country bit. Saipan is indeed not a country. But then she said "it's south-east".
WTF!? No it isn't! Saipan is almost precisely east of Manila!
Is there another Saipan somewhere that I don't know about? How can this person not know where they live? I know I'm a ridiculous nerd for getting all worked up about this, but seriously? She doesn't know where she lives?
Next time someone asks me where Canada is, I'm telling them it's south of the Philippines.
