So... here's the deal, a guy i know wants to sell me a 1987 chevrolet van. The reason i want it is because it has a 350 engine i want for my blazer. He says the transmission is "shot" but A) i don't know what this means totally B) does this mean the motor could be ruined as well? The van has 125 thousand on it... please help

usually not, but with 125,000 on it; it would be a good idea to rebuild the engine

You need a new or rebuilt transmission. Another option is get one from the salvage yard. My local savage yard will give you a 90 day warranty.

Almost anything with a hundred and twenty five thousand miles on it is going to be in need of some king of engine work, especially with the age of the block and heads. If you need to know if the engine has some kind of life you should probably do at the very least a compression check, both wet and dry.
Then you'll have some kind of an idea of what you're in for.

Unless you are buying it for say $5, it sounds like you should just use your money to buy a new crate motor from GM. Then you will know exactly what you are getting. Get the trans rebuilt at the same time. This will save labor time for you or whom ever you have do your work.

just start the engine make sure its not smoking or blue smoke. then check the oil pressure make sure it has more then 20 psi. check for leaks and any funny noise
