Christians, can you spare a moment and try to enlighten me about your beliefs...

...concerning other religions? it didn't occur to me how some Christians really think highly of themselves and their religion until I read an answer given by a Christian on here.

a particular user with an alias "Troy" reprimanded me for "attempting" to "equate Christianity with all the religions of this world". he also said in his litany that I am like trying to "minimize or reduce Christianity to the same level as the pagan religions."

what I want to understand is, is it Christian to belittle other people's beliefs?
I don't know why I am still being accused of generalizing. do you people have a hard time reading and comprehending the word "SOME"?
stellado, how can "some" be a generalization? did any of the English dictionaries change, or is it just your opinion?

In a way, yes. Any truly religious person holds that they and they alone, and their religion and only theirs is the only true one.

Absurd, isn't it?

All religion are pushy, and are meant to keep their followers in line. Religions have been used for thousands of years to extort people with money... and christians are no better than Islam or any other... all the same

same dog, different collar.

I was taught when I was a christian that is was mandatory actually.

It is their way of dealing with differences or at least one of their less violant ways of dealing with them.

When I was a Christian I sincerely believed that I had the truth and that all the other religions and people were lost and going to hell. I did not intend to deceive anyone or gain anything for myself, I was trying to convert people because I truly cared for their souls. People of most religions probably don't mean to be as arrogant or uneducated as they sometimes sound, they are just trying to help.

I feel the same frustation as you.

It seems (within the rather innacurate population sample of Y!A) that it is "Christian" to belittle people and be arogant.

I'm a Mormon. Mainstream (conservative) Mormons generally try to convince people that they are Christians (and we are) ... but modern Christians have so desecrated that name that I think I would almost rather stick with the label "Mormon" and all the derision that implies, than think of myself as somehow bonded to a pack of fearful people who refuse to learn outside of very narrow confines and who falsely call themselves the representatives of the Master.

Now, that was very opinionated of me! (arogant?)

Personally, if I could honestly be myself (in everyday life), I would openly say that Mormons have as much in common with Hare Krishnas, Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists and Wiccans (not sure about other pagan religions) as they do with other followers of Christ. My personal belief is that a true follower of Jesus is as much ONE with every other religion on earth as Jesus would have been. Unified. There's no need to hold ourselves separate from all those who are humble followers of God (of whatever religion).

Jesus would never have stooped to the petty bickering about doctrines that goes on around here.

Eph 4:29 - http://scriptures.lds.org/en/eph/4/29#29
Rom. 14: 19 - http://scriptures.lds.org/en/rom/14/19#19
1 Tim. 1:5-7 - http://scriptures.lds.org/en/1_tim/1/5-7#5

Christians ought not to take the Lord's name in vain (ie. to take His name upon themselves = "Christian" and then not live up to the label). If I am rude and obnoxious, I would not like to claim to be a follower of the Lord. It's true... I sometimes am rude and obnoxious. And I hope I would never do that and claim that I was speaking for Jesus (if I did, I would need to sincerely apologise).

No ,but you non-believers seem to lump all christians together because of the words or actions of a few zealots. It is big mistake to do so.You close off your mind or spirit to the possibility they may have the truth. There is only one truth. If you are open to accept it as such then you would understand our reason to defend it.

i am sorry that some people can be rude. look all i will tell you is that God loves you and everyone here on earth and he doesn't look at titles, He said He weighs the heart.

Apparently you didn't get the memo. Yes the English dictionary changed the definition of "some", it no longer means and undetermined amount. "Some" and "All" are now synonyms. Well, there you go, now you've received the memo.

You cant base the Christian belief off one person. It is true that Jesus told us that he is "the Truth, the Way and the Life. No man shall come to the father but through me." Therefore there is no other religion that will get us to heaven. Also, in Revelation, the Bible tells us of False prophets who will come to us saying that their religion is the way to Heaven. Christianity IS the only way to heaven, and Jesus Christ IS the only way to get there. This doesn't mean that I [personally] look upon other religions as "an alternative way to get to heaven". In my opinion, every single other religion besides Christianity is a lie, made by men. There is only one Way. However, just because I believe other religions to be false, does NOT mean that I go out and belittle the people practicing these religions. It's the Muslim's (just using Islam as one example) belief that I say is a lie, not the people themselves.

I'm Christian, not a bible thumper but I love God and America. I like learning about other religions ... I like asking people what they believe and why because it can be like a whole new way to see the world. A lot of times are perceptions about other religions are wrong, and I find that people of all religions and worldviews are usually pretty thoughtful and have the best of intentions. I don't always agree with them, but usually it will make sense in a way if you can just suspend your disbelief and try to get into the other persons head.

Belittle other people is not something a good Christian should do. I am a Christian, but respect people of all religions. Everyone thinks they are right, so therefore that leads to thinking everyone else if wrong. In reality, no one knows they are right. Faith isn't based on proof.

Christians are often misunderstood by others as being arrogant or intolerant towards other religions and to be fair there are more than enough people claiming to be Christian that do in fact misrepresent us. Please note the following:

1) Christians believe that Jesus is the only way to God. It is an inherent tenet of the faith. It is not a matter of opinion of this or that person, it's what the Bible says:-

Joh 14:6
Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (NIV)

2) This is not arrogance, neither is it that they think so highly of themselves. Christians ought if anything to have a 'sin consciousness' that humbles them rather than make them arrogant.

Rom 3:22-24
This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. (NIV)

3) Christians think that this is such Good News, that the Gospel ought to be shared with the whole world. In fact the Bible says that we should do exactly that, in order that all might be saved.

Mar 16:15-16
He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. (NIV)

4) Non Christians can and do say that we are wrong, misguided, deluded etc. etc. and yes some of us might com across as being a little arrogant, but it ought not be said that our motives are misplaced. If we truly believe what the Bible says then how can we claim to have the love of Jesus in our hearts if we stand idly by and do not reach out to all those who we believe are perishing by the minute.

Mat 7:13
"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. (NIV)

You can call me whatever you like, I will not be offended by any of it. But please, I humbly ask that you accept that most Christians (if not all true Christians) believe with a passion that only the truth of Jesus sacrifice can set you free, that God loves you and wants you to have the same confidence that I have in salvation through Jesus.
