...past, present, and future? there are Christians that hold this belief, which sounds weird to me. how did they come up with this idea, and why do some Christians don't agree with them?

Christians believe salvation comes from faith through Grace only. Works is an result of that grace, not a step towards salvation.

Catholics believe that you need works to be saved and you need works to hold onto your salvation. Thus it does away with God's grace.

Yes , if it is done with a heart that is right with God. Otherwise no. In other words a mere intellectual belief is not enough. (James 2:19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.) So you see the demons believe in Jesus but they are not going to heaven. Neither will a mere belief get you into heaven. A saving faith requires that you surrender your heart, soul, and life to Jesus Christ. You must obey God's laws to the best of your ability. Grace is not a free ticket into heaven. Grace is the power to stop sinning , because the Holy Spirit of God resides in those who accept/ surrender to Christ. Obedience /works is not the basis of a Christians salvation/forgiveness. The blood of Jesus is the basis, but obedience or works is the fruit/evidence of a Christian . ( James 2:17-18 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. and James 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.) Lastly one must repent of his sin to receive forgiveness. Repentance means turning from and stopping your sin. If one confesses his sin to God/Christ with no intention of stopping his sin, with no sorrow for his crime against God, meaning without rerepentance there is no sacrifice/forgiveness for that sin. ( Romans 6:1 -2 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? Heaven Forbid! , also Hebrews 10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, & also 2nd Peter 2:20-22 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire. )
