Citroen C3 - anti-pollution faulty?!?

Hi, my mum gave me her car on thursday, its been sitting on her driveway for over a year, its an 07 plate citroen C3.. I started it up after work yesterday and it beeped at me and is displaying 'anti pollution faulty' and now the engine light is permanently on... I haven't noticed any difference in the car (although i am not yet used to it, so who knows) well after driving an ancient hyundai for years... whats an anti pollution and why is it faulty?? what do i do? thank you (sorry for the babble.. me and car speak do not mix)
 
Petrol or diesel?

Possibly as the result of the year non use, the exhaust / catalyst system is in need of a clear out especially if it has just sat with the engine running occasionally.
Try a drive of 10-20 miles, see if the engine will perform - will reach high revs when warm.
otherwise it's a trip to a dealer or garage.
