My parents have a 1997 citroen ZX 1.9 diesel (non turbo) and recently the head gasket blew. They are getting a new car and the ZX is just sat in the driveway. I was thinking of trying to replace the head gasket myself and i was wondering what your thoughts are on this. Now, i'm only 14 years old but i'm in no rush to fix it because my parents are getting a new car and who cares if i mess it up anyway. I was thinking of making it my new toy and give me something to do when i'm bored. So i ask you, is it possible that i could eventually successfully replace it myself with a lot of research and guides and all the right tools etc, or is this something way more complex than that and i just shouldn't bother wasting my time?

Go for it. I'm only 21 and I did two head gasket repairs. Its actually not that hard, took about three days and 100 dollars for each one. Just buy the repair book for the car, be organized about parts and things (using little plastic bags and label them works wonders) and if you know anyone that knows about cars have them help you. Also simply tinkering with things like that will help you down the road. I will say though it can be a bit complicated and it will take some degree of patients and research in your case but don't let that scare you of from attempting it. And hey, lastly if you cant fix it and put the engine back together it was going tom have to be taken apart anyways so you just saved someone else allot of work. Good Luck!!
