I’ve been working for the park service for four summers now. I’d like to work for them with a permanent job once I finish my college degree in recreation and tourism. But this past fall I finally went to therapy. I’m going to go on anti-depressants soon because I have depression, general and social anxiety disorder. I’m afraid I won’t be able to get a government job with these problems. I can’t remember when I first got my summer job if I had to disclose any medications I was on because I wasn’t on anything at the time. Even if you can’t be discriminated against mental health treatment; the review board could see that and chose not to hire because of it. Even if they don’t actually say so; they could come up with another excuse like not having the same qualifications as another candidate. I’d never know the difference.

My second career choice would be working as a civilian employee for the military’s recreation department on a base. But I’m guessing they would be a bit more picky about medical issues being the military—even if I’m not actually a soldier and won’t have a gun.

My work doesn’t seem to be affected much by my depression/anxiety. I’m a hard worker and it seems like it’s the one thing I can actually control in my life. But when it comes to dealing with myself on my own time or being around people and interacting in a social setting; that’s a different story. Have you ever had trouble getting a job because of your treatments? Do you think I’d be able to get a job with the government (U.S.) with my conditions and medications? Thank you.
