My laptop is a Dell Vostro 1500, Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3, Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo CPU, T5470 @ 1.6GHz, 1.60GHz, 1.99 GB of RAM. I had my computer hard drive partitioned, the C is where the OS is and the D is just some free space. C drive is 20GB, and D drive is 210GB. Probably not the best idea but I just partitioned it 80:20 without thinking when I reformatted the computer and installed XP again. I run my laptop like normal people run their desktop, I leave it on frequently overnight, put it on hibernate, leave Firefox open, use Photoshop 5 for hours, etc... I always keep my documents backed up on an external HD (500GB) so I have a decent amount of room on there which I update every month. On my computer I have a lot of movies (134GB worth), music (46.7GB), and pictures (4.3GB) all backed up. Im reaching the capacity of my computer so I was going to start deleting some movies and just carry my HD with me but anyways its been really slow lately. I usually run Disk Cleanup frequently and I use Disk Defragmenter sporadically. I havent done it in a while because I have been lazy and I analyze my D drive and it says I have 2.68GB of Free Space = 1%, and on the C (I've always had under 15% which isnt good but I cant move everything over cause programs I download always try to automatically download to the C drive, and I have to do everything custom to make it go to the D drive) i have 1.12GB of Free Space = 5%. I can't even defrag it really because over 50% of it is colored Red and that has never happened, its usually white and empty. Im not sure if all the movies I downloaded were fragmented or becuase I leave programs open it keeps needing more room to re-write is when i leave it open to keep running. Again I've been leaving my programs open for long periods of time so I know that I have to go to the Windows Task Manager>Process> Virtual Memory Size (Mozilla takes up 250,000K because I leave it open all the time) and end some programs but even restarting my computer and ending those does not work. Im going to try to restart my computer, see how many programs are running (should be like 25 am I right?) and Google the names ie: iTunesHelper.exe, which is obviously Itunes. Anyone have this problem or can help me. My virtual memory runs at 2046MB - 4096MB, and the recommended is 3055MB, I was wondering if I should change the minimum range as well maybe to like 2700MB. Any help would be appreciated.
