If I make a posting (though groups.google.com, say, or to answers.yahoo.com for that matter), by virtue of the fact that I author the piece, I have copyright on it.

However, newsgroup postings are typically picked up by other services and made public (archived) on the web such as at groups.google.com or http://newsgroups.derkeiler.com/Archive/.

Contrast this with articles from news sources which are not rebroadcast.

Where does the essential distinction come from? And is there something that I should write in posts to maximally restrict dissemination (e.g. may not be republished without permission).

Specific references appreciated.
Barry C: Thanks for your comments.
One part remains. Does it behoove me to put something like
'May not be republished without permission'
at the bottom of my posts or is that extraneous?
