...effects of smoking tobacco? I cannot seem to find any information on the psychological effects of tobacco smoking that doesn't come from a quit-smoking "self help" website. I understand that it is associated with many diseases and is highly addictive and everything else that has been preached to me since I was five years old.

I just want to know what short-term affects it has on the brain. I'm curious how people typically feel after a cigarette.

I am a smoker and have been for many years. When I first started I was told it would calm my nerves.

I think when I have a cigarette, I can concentrate better for a few minutes afterward.

The only other way I think of explaining it is, it's similar to a pacifier for grown ups.

If I get upset, bored, lonely I have a cigarette.

Somehow it's soothing.

Ha Ha im smoking right now because im going through some hard times. For me it clams me down and relaxes me, i feel great after smoking. The only bad thing is im 18 and can't breathe that good if i walk down the street and fuck running unless it's from the cops, and at night it keeps me up, i don't go to bed until like three every morning. But i still Love smoking!!!! Someone once told me that why it clams you down is because of the deep breathing. Hope this helps!! :)

smoking a cigarette is 'relieving'...that is, it only appears to be because of the slight withdrawl we experience from the last cigarette we smoked. smoking is all mental---when you really focus on it you realize it does nothing for you. I had quit for 3 weeks and then fell back into it for the past week. The past few days my average heartrate has been around 90bpm and I have been very anxious...i think the cigs had something to do with this.
