Could you survive without friends or family, or could you function?

I'm not saying you would die if they weren't here, but could you live normally? And what does your friends & family do that makes like eaiser, and more able to function? I'm not asking what you would do if they weren't here, or if you dont have any family or friends, but what do they REALLY do to comfort you and make things eaiser?
