Different work outs to do at a local recreation center/gym with a friend?

Well, a friend of mine and myself, were thinking about starting to go work out at a local gym place to start getting in shape for softball, track, and just for the heck of it. We'd really like to know we various exercises that would increase our speed (running), distance (running), arm strength, and core. Why not even throw in exercises/work outs on how to improve our verticals and my hurdles skills. The gym place has *lots* of different weight lifting machines. From standing still bikes, to benches for weight lifting, to jump ropes, to medicine balls. They also have a pretty large wrap around track (not really an official "track" just a running/walking lane that is pretty dang large), a swimming pool, basketball courts, and volleyball courts. We were also wondering about how often to do which exercises. We were thinking to do a cardio/running exercise on one day, and then a muscle building one another...or doing (for example) running on Monday, weight lifting on Tuesday, and improving our verticles on Wednesday.
