While I am NO tree hugger, the CAFE mandates that will require cars/trucks by 2016 to get 36MPG will sure get a lot of dead-weight off the road.

And might even free up some cash to spend on something else?
 
No, the CAFE mandates are that a makers fleet has to AVERAGE 36MPG by 2016.
If that's not rescinded when Obama is thrown out in '12.
Look at Chevy, they sell cars now that average over 40MPG, for every 3 of those sold they sell a 22MPG truck..
Whats the average?
I'll NOT be told by the gov't what I'm going to drive.....
 
A lot of people may need an SUV, but I bet you...no i GUARANTEE you that the majority of suv owners could live life fine with a sedan. I think its a good thing obama brought that in.

But btw not all of the vehicles have to meet that, but a certain percentage of the vehicles that an automaker sells has to meet that standard.
