We have two direct tv receviers and the one we use the most has no problem at all besides the going out from time to time in a storm. but our second one we hardly ever use and when i actually try to watch tv in that room it always say searching and (771). there cant be anything wrong with it because like i said we hardly ever got to use it. but i'm not use if that was the cause of the problem. please help, it'll cost $50 for someone to come just to click one button

I Googled "troubleshooting 771 Directtv" and got this page where the tech support said "If the receiver works fine in another room then you have a cable or connector problem. Has DirecTV ever worked in this room? Are you sure that the cable is actually connected to the satellite dish?" http://forums.directv.com/pe/action/forums/displaypost?postID=10969256 Anyway it made me think that you might be able to go into the Directtv site and talk to a tech support to try and find out what the problem is before having to have them come to your home. I have Directtv and I had a problem with it about a year ago (not the same problem you are having though) and the tech support was able to talk me through different steps over the phone to fix the problem. You might be able to get help from them that way without them coming to your house.

Sounds like you have a line issue. You need a Directv installer to come troubleshoot:

It could be a number of issues.
