dishwasher...leaves a bit of sand like residue on/in dishes after washing?

Does anyone else have this problem (or had) and know how to fix it, or where it's coming from, how to clean it, etc.?
I usually find a bit of the sand like stuff in the cups or if a light bowl on the lower rack overturned and filled with water, it would also be in the water.
